Still Life Paintings by Mati Klarwein

When Mati speaks, in his comments on 'Annunciation', of 'all the early years of adolescent brooding over potatoes and eggs', he is not talking about his experience of breakfast with a hangover - but of the years spent developing and refining his craft with still life studies.  During the fifties Mati produced around a hundred paintings, many of which were still life studies that went unnamed by him at the time, and which his family are in the process of cataloguing.

Even during the years of psychedelic surrealism, the same precision and care is evident in his work as in these early studies, and the passion for detail that these studies imbued never left him.  This passion for detail became a defining characteristic of later works such as Camouflage, where, though the subject matter is not surreal in any way, the abnormal level of detail gives the impression of enhanced perception, with the natural beauty of the landscape seen as though in a dream-like vision.
